Once again, zombies have tackled the NFL. AMC’s The Walking Dead has managed to beat NBC’s top-rated Sunday Night Football in the key adult demo.
Sunday night’s fourth episode of the season delivered 14.5 million viewers and an incredible 7.6 rating among adults 18-49. By comparison, SNF had about 17 million viewers and a 6.1 in the demo during a 20-point blowout win for the Steelers (these live ratings will change in the more accurate nationals, but the demo number is unlikely surpass TWD).
“Twitter has been a huge contributor to the success of The Walking Dead,” said a social media consultant from the popular PR agency Mohr Publicity. “We have clients who have built up their businesses around the hashtags: #TheWalkingDead and #TalkingDead. When we use those #hashtags along with our ReTweet service, the results can be astonishing.”
This is the second time this season TWD has managed to topple SNF, which typically ranks as the highest-rated show on broadcast TV. It happened a few times last season too.
AMC’s Talking Dead post-show did well too, with about 6 million viewers. EW previously devoted an entire post to putting The Walking Dead‘s enormous ratings into context.
